Ground Source FAQ
Below we have tried to answer a few of the most common questions regarding geothermal heating and cooling in general, and Ground Source Systems in particular.

-
Do you perform residential installations?
We do not take on residential projects of any type or size. Our business is totally focused on large installations such as schools, churches, and military bases, and as such is simply too large to handle individual needs.
For residential projects, your local electric utility is a good place to start. They can usually connect you with a qualified geothermal installer in your area who will be a good match for your needs.
-
What is the typical savings and payback period?
Organizations that retrofit their existing conventional HVAC with geothermal usually realize very significant savings right away, often in the range of 45%-60%. At rates like this, the payback period is usually just five to seven years - often less.
-
Can I talk to current clients?
Ground Source Systems has many happy clients with whom we can put you in touch. If there is one in your area, we may even be able to set up a walkthrough where you can look at the installation and ask the client questions.
-
How much space is required for the loop field?
Required well field area varies according to many factors, including drill depth, bore spacing, and system size. Many of these factors, in turn, depend on other variables such as ground condition. Because of this, there is no correct "generic" answer to the question of required real estate. Once you contact us and we perform a site evaluation, we can give you an exact ansewr.
-
I am planning a new building. Can you design the HVAC with geothermal?
Design-build is a core service of Ground Source Systems, and a big element of what sets us apart from the competition. Our system designers are IGSHPA certified and have the benefit of many years' experience.
-
How feasible is it to retrofit an existing building?
Retrofits are extremely feasible, usually paying for themselves within five to seven years. Our expert designers will work with you to determine the best way to upgrade your particular installation.
-
Are any ductwork changes typically required on a retrofit?
Generally speaking, the duct system for an existing forced-air installation will work with a geothermal retrofit without major modifications. If any ductwork changes are required, our designers and crew can deal with it as part of the project.
-
Do you subcontract work to others?
Ground Source Systems is fully capable of handling all stages of a geothermal project in-house, up to and including ductwork, electrical, and specialty DDC controls. If we do ever subcontract a task, it is only in order to serve the client better or faster, and work will only be sourced to reliable subcontractors.
